Three conventions, one direction

Mils divide a full circle into convenient angular units. This converter supports two named mils conventions. NATO mils use 6400 units per circle. Warsaw Pact mils use 6000 units per circle. Degrees use 360 units per circle. A direction can be represented in any of the three, but the numeric value changes with the convention.

A quarter circle is 90 degrees, 1600 NATO mils, or 1500 Warsaw Pact mils. A half circle is 180 degrees, 3200 NATO mils, or 3000 Warsaw Pact mils. This mils tool calculates those ratios directly and keeps the label beside every number.

How the mils converter calculates

The converter divides the entered value by the full circle of its selected convention. That circle fraction is multiplied by 360 for degrees, 6400 for NATO mils, and 6000 for Warsaw Pact mils. No IRON NEST game formula is involved. The conversion is deterministic and runs locally.

For example, 800 NATO mils is one eighth of 6400. The converter returns 45 degrees and 750 Warsaw Pact mils. The direction did not change. Only the scale used to describe it changed.

Keep the mils label attached

A bare value such as 1500 is ambiguous. It could mean 1500 NATO mils, 1500 Warsaw Pact mils, or a non-angular game unit. Select the input convention only when the source or interface identifies it. The mils converter cannot infer a unit from magnitude alone.

When writing a firing card, include the word degrees, NATO mils, or Warsaw mils. Do not shorten both mils systems to the same unlabeled value. The difference grows around the circle and can create a large direction error.

Understand the full-circle endpoint

The converter accepts zero and one complete circle. In degrees those boundaries are 0 and 360. In NATO mils they are 0 and 6400. In Warsaw Pact mils they are 0 and 6000. The endpoint converts to the endpoint rather than wrapping to zero.

Zero and a complete circle point in the same physical direction, but preserving the entered endpoint makes the conversion auditable. If a source says 6400 NATO mils, the result says 360 degrees rather than silently rewriting the input as zero.

Mils validation and error recovery

The mils converter rejects a blank value, a non-finite number, a negative number, and a number above the selected full circle. The error states the convention, allowed boundary, and received value. Change either the number or convention and convert again.

Switching from degrees to NATO mils changes the valid maximum from 360 to 6400. Switching to Warsaw Pact mils changes it to 6000. The page reruns the conversion when the convention changes, so an out-of-range value becomes visible immediately.

Use mils with map geometry

The ballistics calculator produces a clockwise bearing from north and prints all three conventions. The firing planner prints degrees for its map result. Use this mils converter when a known labelled output must be transferred to a different labelled interface.

Conversion does not fix an incorrect origin. If a spotter bearing was copied as a firing bearing, converting it to mils preserves the wrong vector. Solve the target first, then measure the bearing from the Nest, then convert the correct angle.

Mils are not map distance

Angular mils and map units answer different questions. Mils describe direction or angular measure. Map range describes distance between coordinates. Powder charge and elevation are separate game controls. Do not feed a distance value into the mils converter because both happen to be numbers.

Mils privacy and evidence boundary

The converter does not store or send the entered value. All calculations run in the page. No conversion input or output is included in analytics. Reset restores a labelled quarter-circle example.

The arithmetic convention is public and stable. Whether IRON NEST expects degrees, NATO mils, Warsaw Pact mils, or another control value is a different factual claim. This site publishes that claim only after a current labelled source qualifies it. Until then, use the unit shown by the current game.

Check a conversion without another calculator

A quick fraction check catches many typing errors. One quarter of any full circle should point east when bearing begins at north and moves clockwise. One half should point south. Three quarters should point west. If the converted number does not preserve that fraction, review the selected convention and input.

For a smaller check, divide the full circle by eight. The result represents forty-five degrees. The three values should be 45, 800, and 750 under the degree, NATO, and Warsaw labels. This check is useful when transferring an oblique bearing and when a copied value looks unexpectedly large.

Round only at the point of transfer

The converter keeps decimal precision through the ratio and formats the visible result to four decimal places without unnecessary trailing zeros. Keep the more precise displayed value while checking the direction. Round only if the destination interface limits input precision, and record the rounded convention on the firing card.

Repeated rounding can create drift. Converting a rounded output back and forth may not reproduce the original value exactly. Return to the original labelled source whenever possible instead of chaining several copied conversions. A single direct conversion preserves the clearest audit trail.
